About NEWAVE
Water Governance Atlas
Behind the Water Governance, Atlas there is a collective of 15 young scholars (see contributors section below) interested in exploring water worlds in their glorious chaos. If we were each asked what water governance is, or even what water is, we would probably all provide different answers. We are a diverse group of modelers, political ecologists, geographers, hydrogeologists, social scientists, engineers, and quite a few other things. Our experiences of water and of doing research on water differ immensely, from standing knee-deep in the mud, swimming, talking with water vendors, walking along rivers, or sitting in a more or less neat office for long hours. With the Atlas, we enter a conversation about what makes water governance an important issue.
Starting point
Our starting point was that we felt uncomfortable with the male gaze of seeing “everything from nowhere(1)” on which mapping projects often rely. Instead, we collaboratively developed our Atlas as a tension-full dialogue between stories that reflect different ways of understanding water governance.

We explore themes that cut across our research projects and that seem to require efforts to pluralize, nuance, politicize, or even oppose. These themes are:

Creators & Contributors
The idea of a Water Governance Atlas originated as a part of the NEWAVE Next Water Governance Innovative Training Network funded from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No 861509.
The concept at the foundations of the Atlas development has been co-developed by NEWAVE Early Stage Researchers task force: Javier Rodríguez Ros (ESR 2), Sinafekesh Girma Wolde (ESR3), Radhika Singh (ESR 4), Wenjin Hao (ESR 5), Hannah Porada (ESR 8), and Marie Belland (ESR 13). Other contributors to the concept note: Nina Valin (ESR6), Dona Geagea (ESR10), Johannes Wagner (ESR15), Dave Huitema (supervisor and WP6 lead), Paolo D’Odorico (supervisor).
The design has been developed and produced by Webfluencer BV in close collaboration with the Atlas Task force and the NEWAVE Coordination and Management team, Caterina Marinetti, Paulina Raniecka, Jampel Dell’Angelo.
